Primus Partners, in collaboration with the Government of Maharashtra, has released a Thought Leadership report outlining a vision for a zero-waste textile industry in India by 2047. The report was released by Mr. Sanjay Savkare, Hon’ble Minister of Textiles, at Bharat Tex 2025, where Maharashtra participated as the Knowledge Partner.
The textile industry is a dynamic and vibrant sector, known for its creativity and cultural significance. However, the lesser-known reality is its substantial environmental impact. As the second-largest waste-producing industry, textile waste is increasing at an alarming rate, primarily driven by the rise of fast fashion. This Thought Leadership initiative aims to shed light on sustainable alternatives to mitigate this issue and policy suggestions to driving sustainability in this sector. Rather than allowing discarded textiles to end up in landfills and be classified as waste, the focus is on promoting recycling and upcycling, ensuring that materials are repurposed effectively to contribute to a circular economy.
The report highlights a strategic framework to integrate sustainability, circular economy principles, and resource efficiency across the textile value chain. Addressing this issue presents a USD 3.5 billion opportunity and employment to 1 lakh individuals over the next five years, requiring policy interventions, industry collaboration, and consumer engagement.
