Nilaya Varma, Co-Founder and Group CEO, Primus Partners, mentions that the Global South must move beyond simply adopting AI to actively shape how AI is designed, deployed and governed. Speaking at the launch of Primus Partners’ compendium, he emphasises that the success of AI should be measured by the number of people and communities it can meaningfully impact, rather than by the scale or sophistication of individual AI models.

The compendium highlights the importance of developing AI solutions suited to the realities of the Global South, including varied compute capacity, diverse languages, representative data and resource constraints. Varma stresses that the next frontier is scaling locally relevant AI solutions at affordable costs, with India’s experience in population-scale digital infrastructure offering a model for building technology around outcomes and accessibility.
